Mike Rigby – Sculptor

Dr Mike Rigby is a consultant in the NHS and first sculpted a few pieces in 1996 when working at the Henderson Hospital, an inpatient therapeutic community, during art therapy sessions.

A few mores pieces surfaced in the following years, but it was during lockdown that he really got started making a new piece every few days. The work progresses on the assumption that something will emerge from the clay without, as far as possible, bringing to bear conscious memory or desire.

He works in terracotta which after biscuit firing is given a second reduction firing in sawdust to produce blackware.

All pieces are imagined on a greater scale and can be commissioned and scaled up as bronzes."
