An exhibition by Jacqui Basset,

a thoughtfully curated collection of contemporary artworks inspired by the beautiful and diverse landscapes and natural rhythms of Jacqui’s Lakeland home. My artwork is deeply tethered to the drama, light and seasonal rhythms of the landscape that surrounds me.

The Anatomy of a Painting.
A Lecture by Martin Kinnear

In Co-operation with Gallery North West and Tullie.

Venue: Tullie lecture Theatre - 30th April 2026
19:00 PM - 20:30 PM - doors open 18:30PM

Full Lecture Description

Every painting tells a story — not only on its surface, but deep within its layers. Beneath the visible image lies a carefully constructed anatomy of structure, tone, colour, and material that gives the work its life.

In The Anatomy of a Painting, award-winning painter and Royal College of Art lecturer Martin Kinnear takes audiences beneath the skin of painting to reveal how artists, from the Old Masters to today’s innovators,

build pictures that endure. Far from being a dry technical talk, this lecture combines insight, humour, and live visual examples to show how materials shape meaning. Martin explains how pigments, mediums, and surfaces interact, why certain techniques produce such distinctive light and texture, and how a painting’s success often depends on decisions invisible to the viewer.

Drawing on his own studio practice — and on works by Rembrandt, Turner, Constable, and Emily Young — Martin unpacks the physical language of painting: how an earth pigment creates gravity, how a glaze lends breath, how chalk, oil, and varnish each have their own temperament. Audiences leave not just informed, but newly attuned to what makes paintings work.

Spotlight On:

MELANIE HOPWOOD CERAMICS

Melanie’s ceramic sculptures and jewellery stem from an interest in geological features and rugged, weathered landscape and coastline, particularly of Northern England and Scotland.

Rockpool Boulders emerged from a collaborative project between Melanie and writer Sue Spencer who wrote a number of ‘haiku’ poems in response to the ideas behind Melanie’s boulder forms. Metal letterpress is used to imprint the words into the surface of each piece. Melanie now also incorporates some of her own haiku into her work.

Two decorative stones with blue glass centers, featuring spiral shell carvings and the phrase "WHAT REMAINS DIS HEB" on their surfaces, placed on a white background.
