Gillian Westland

  • Gallery North West 24 Front Street Brampton, England, CA8 1NG United Kingdom (map)

We are delighted to welcome Gillian Westland to our beautiful gallery. Gillian is a Scottish artist celebrated for her sensitive and detailed portrayals of birds. Working in a range of media including watercolour, pencil, ink and mixed media, Gillian combines careful observation with an expressive handling of line and colour to capture both the physical traits and the character of her avian subjects.

Her practice is rooted in field observation and sketching: short, focused studies made outdoors inform larger, more finished works produced in the studio. This approach gives her pieces a lively immediacy — feathers, posture and fleeting behaviours are recorded with an attentiveness that suggests both scientific curiosity and artistic empathy. Her work is well known for conveying atmosphere — the chill of a shoreline, the quick alertness of a robin, the patient watchfulness of a heron — often evoking a quiet, contemplative mood.
