Julie Hollis was born in Birmingham and studied at Worcester University, gaining an honours degree in Education and Art & Design. She moved to Dumfries and Galloway 35 years ago.
Working with a variety of media Julie enjoys learning new techniques and combining these to create unique effects.

Inspirations
The open skies, mercurial weather and fragile shores of the Solway Coast form a huge inspiration for Julie’s work. She enjoys depicting high contrast days, with huge stormy skies, focusing on the juxtaposition between the strength and the fragility of nature - often in the same image.

Work Process
Julie is presently exploring print making in its analogue and digital forms. A technique of layering base photographs with photographs of natural and man made textures is Julie’s current passion.
She starts by taking a base photograph. Over the last ten years she has collated a large database of images of various textures. These include pictures of woven fabric, etched metal, wood grain and even her own painted brush strokes. Using computer software Julie layers various texture photographs on top of the base photograph and manipulates each one until she gets the effect that she needs. The resulting images resemble prints created in a more traditional way.
Julie prints limited editions using archival pigment inks and museum quality paper.
