The Chantry House Gallery

What a superb little gallery this is! located in Ripley, North Yorkshire. Ripley village was bustling with visitors, including those drawn to the castle, church, and various charming shops when I first discovered it. My main reason for visiting was to view the professional artist James Wheeler’s beautiful artwork, which truly captivated me. We are excited to announce that James has generously agreed to exhibit at our gallery in 2026. During this exhibition, James Wheeler sold four original paintings, yet two stunning pieces remained: beautiful landscapes painted in subtle, muted colours that skillfully capture the delicate play of light and shadows over the moors.

The gallery itself is not large, but it has been established since the 1980s and consequently has built up a loyal and committed following over the years. Why not take a look at the calendar of events on their website https://www.chantryhousegallery.co.uk and perhaps consider planning a small trip to experience it first hand?

The friendly curator and I enjoyed a relaxed chat, exchanging ideas and sharing experiences. The warm atmosphere was perfectly suited to browsing and taking in the beautiful art on display. This spacious, well-lit gallery is truly a joy to peruse.

James Wheeler, one of their regular invited artists, originally hails from Scotland. Growing up surrounded by the raw, rugged countryside of his native Glasgow, combined with the rich architectural heritage and numerous galleries, James’s passion for art flourished from an early age. While training as a carpet designer, he studied at The Glasgow School of Art before moving to England to join one of the country’s largest carpet manufacturers in Yorkshire. Here, he carved out a very successful career and eventually became the Studio Manager. Living close to the Pennines, with the Yorkshire Dales also on his doorstep, further fuelled his love for painting.

Using the light and atmosphere of the surrounding landscape, James employs subtle colour and texture to create a contemporary look in his paintings. At the same time, his work retains a timeless quality that invites viewers to form their own personal interpretations. We are very much looking forward to welcoming James back for a four-week exhibition with us in September 2026.
