James Allan Wheeler
James was born in 1944 in Glasgow, Scotland. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art, whilst training as a Carpet Designer. He then moved to England, to carry on his training at one of Yorkshire's largest carpet manufacturers. He carved out a highly successful career and eventually led the design department as the Design Studio Manager.
With colour and composition being so important in his professional designs, he allows this to flow naturally through the subtlety of hue and texture in his landscapes. It is in the light and atmosphere of the landscape, where James aims to mix memory and desire.
James paints in oils, but on the unusual surface of cork, which he finds, enhances the surface textures that is a character of his paintings. His work straddles the contemporary and the timeless, inviting viewers to a personal interpretation of the paintings.
